According to Hollon, individuals over 65 years of age who can complete a specific standing test for two minutes are considered to have top-tier leg strength.
The Two-Minute Chair Sit-to-Stand Test
The chair sit-to-stand movement serves as an effective evaluation of leg strength and endurance for adults aged 65 and older. The exercise starts from a standing position, requiring the participant to lower their glutes toward a chair without actually sitting down, and then press back up through their feet. Hollon instructs participants to stop shy of lowering all the way down to a seated position, aiming to drop at least a foot above the chair while maintaining proper form.
Ensure you keep your feet flat on the floor, push your hips back and hinge slightly forward, keeping your back straight.

Muscle Activation and Progress Tracking
This specific movement activates the glutes, quads, and hamstrings, forcing them to keep the hip and knee positions stable against gravity. Repeatedly rising from a hovering position for more than two minutes without tiring indicates excellent lower-body conditioning. Hollon notes that this test provides a practical way for individuals to evaluate their physical progress over time by measuring how close they can hover to the chair, how long they can hold the position, and how many total repetitions they can complete.
