The Prime Minister of Samoa, the Honorable Fiamē Naomi Mata’afa welcomed the presence of King Charles III and other Commonwealth leaders. King Charles III of England, for his first participation in this high-level meeting as king, reiterated his commitment to peace, democracy, equality and the prosperity of the Member States. On the issue of slavery, King Charles III emphasized the importance of recognizing the Commonwealth’s past, particularly its inequalities.
“As I listen to the people of the Commonwealth, I understand how the most painful aspects of our past continue to resonate. It is therefore essential that we understand our history to guide us and make the right choices in the future. “, said the King of England, “none of us can change the past, but we can commit with all our hearts to learn from it and find creative ways to correct the inequalities that persist”.
He reiterated his longstanding confidence in the Commonwealth as a platform for real opportunity, especially for young people and marginalized voices.
In a call to action, Charles III announced the launch of a new Commonwealth scholarship program aimed at improving access to education for students from small islands. He emphasized that this initiative would focus on skills essential for a resilient future, including nursing, teaching, engineering and green technologies.
At the end of the proceedings, the Commonwealth Heads of Government selected Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the Honorable Shirley Ayokor Botchwey as the new Commonwealth Secretary General.
