The Attilio Manca Murder Mystery: New Phone Chats Reveal Alleged Smear Campaign and Mafia Cover-Up Connections

Seized mobile phone chats and encrypted messaging data are shedding fresh light on the 2004 death of Dr. Attilio Manca, a 34-year-old urologist in service at the Viterbo hospital found dead in his Viterbo apartment on February 11, 2004.

While official investigations initially closed the case as a drug overdose, the physician’s family and girlfriend rejected that conclusion, pointing out that Manca was a strictly left-handed doctor who had injection marks in his left arm, which they argued pointed to a staged crime scene.

How the Mafia Connection Eerily Emerged in 2023

The official narrative began to shift significantly in 2023, when a final Supreme Court cassation ruling upholding the conviction of 71-year-old mafioso Rosario Pio Cattafi referenced Manca’s death as a murder rather than an overdose. According to the 2023 appellate judgment, judges stated that Cattafi had escorted the doctor to tend to a hiding Bernardo Provenzano, who required urgent medical attention. The court’s findings suggested Manca was killed by rogue intelligence services to prevent the disclosure of Provenzano’s hideout.

The 2023 legal proceedings did not establish direct involvement by Cattafi in the urologist’s actual killing, citing the circumstance only to substantiate his prior mafia membership.

The 2026 Social Media Campaign Targeting Key Case Figures

Between April 11 and June 28, 2026, a series of daily video broadcasts materialized on YouTube and other social platforms featuring false allegations against prominent figures linked to the Manca case. The broadcasts were hosted by Aurelio Coppolino, a 46-year-old unemployed man who faced financial difficulties. Coppolino targeted House Justice Commission Tommaso Calderone, attorney Giuseppe Lo Presti, Palermo prosecutor Maurizio de Lucia, antimafia deputy prosecutor Vito Di Giorgio, and Fabio Repici, the lawyer representing the murdered doctor’s family.

Coppolino claimed in his broadcasts that Repici, Calderone, and Lo Presti served as mafia leaders, accused de Lucia of sexual misconduct, and alleged Di Giorgio acted as an informant inside the prosecutor’s office. Following a complaint, Aurelio Coppolino was the focus of investigations regarding live video broadcasts with accusations against Calderone.

Secret Chat Exchanges and WhatsApp Messages Disclosed

The Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto prosecutor’s office subsequently deposited forensic extractions from Coppolino’s mobile phone and computer during an evidentiary hearing. The recovered chat records revealed that before and during his video broadcasts, Coppolino communicated constantly with high-profile political and legal figures, including former antimafia parliamentary commission president Nicola Morra and attorney Ugo Colonna, who later became Coppolino’s defense counsel.

Additional chat participants included an inactive financial police officer and a Messina journalist within a WhatsApp group named 2027. Colonna maintained in statements to DossierToday.it that Coppolino acted independently during the broadcasts and received no directives to defame prosecutors or officials.

From my conversations with Coppolino, it does not appear that there was any solicitation or agreement, or that I directed Coppolino to make public statements against the Palermo prosecutor, the Honourable Calderone, or the lawyer Repici.

Audio Files Reveal Coordination Surrounding Legal Documents

Seized voice notes and messages detailed interactions between Coppolino and Morra regarding efforts to challenge the credibility of turncoat D’Amico and other witnesses in the Manca murder inquiry. On June 9, 2026, Coppolino sent morning documents to Morra complaining that Colonna was withholding specific paperwork concerning Calderone, Lo Presti, and Di Giorgio. Morra replied via voice note that he had spoken with Colonna regarding upcoming document exchanges and a scheduled meeting with Fabio Trizzino, the attorney representing Paolo Borsellino’s children.

Trizzino confirmed meeting with Morra and Colonna on June 10, 2026, but denied any exchange of information, documents, or notes. Later that morning, Colonna messaged Coppolino indicating he would send case files illustrating alleged collusion between Lo Presti and Di Giorgio in favoring a mafia clan.
