The personal archives of hip-hop pioneer Biz Markie have been opened to the public through a dedicated exhibition titled The Biz Markie Experience
. Hosted by the late artist’s widow, Tara Hall, the event took place on April 8, 2026, at New York’s Invite Only Studios.
The exhibition serves as a time-capsule tribute, offering an intimate look into the life and creative process of an artist known for his unique personality and influence on the genre. The display showcases a wide array of personal belongings, including a legendary collection of vinyl, sneakers, jerseys, and jewelry.
A Glimpse Into the Artist’s Private World
Visitors to the exhibit encountered a variety of artifacts that document Biz Markie’s journey from his early days in hip-hop to his status as a global icon. The collection includes deeply personal items that reflect both his professional achievements and his daily life.
- Handwritten lyrics for his signature hit,
Just a Friend
. - The master copy of his 1986
Slugo
demo. - Technical equipment, including SL-700 Technics turntables and a Sanyo cassette recorder with accompanying microphones, and tapes.
- A custom piano painted by Duke Doobie Sims.
- Personal memorabilia such as a wallet, ID cards, licenses, and food stamp coupons.
- A collection of toys and rare trading cards, including one commemorating his first pitch at an Oakland A’s baseball game in 2014.
- Fashion items including a Biz Markie hat and 1986 Adidas sneakers, complete with the original box and sales receipt.
The archives also highlight significant legal and political intersections of his life. On display is a CD copy of the album All Samples Cleared!
, accompanied by paperwork related to the historic sampling lawsuit between Grand Upright and Warner Brothers. The exhibit features a photo of Biz Markie with Barack Obama from approximately 2004, alongside a signed condolence letter from Barack and Michelle Obama sent after the artist’s death in 2021.
Preserving Hip-Hop’s Visual History
A central component of the exhibition is the focus on early hip-hop photography. The archive includes rare portraits of Biz Markie captured by the legendary hip-hop photographer George DuBose. These images were created during the sessions for the 1986 release Make the Music With Your Mouth, Biz
, which marked Biz Markie’s recorded debut.

The significance of these photographs is amplified by the rarity of surviving material from that era. Because original negatives from early hip-hop photography were often lost or not preserved, these estate-sanctioned works represent a critical piece of the permanent visual canon of hip-hop’s formative period.
George DuBose is recognized for producing some of the most iconic imagery in the genre, having worked with other influential artists such as Run DMC, X Clan, and Eric B. & Rakim. The portraits of Biz Markie capture the artist before he achieved mainstream fame, preserving the moment his visual identity was first formally introduced to the world.
The Biz Markie Experience continues to operate as a living archive dedicated to music, culture, and the legacy of an artist whose creative identity helped define his career and cement his place in music history.
