Tyler Duckworth, a standout competitor and two-time champion on MTV’s reality franchise The Challenge, has died at the age of 44, according to his family. His mother, Joni Duckworth, announced his death on Facebook on Thursday, August 13, stating that he passed away earlier that week, as reported by AOL and People.

Reality Television Career and Championship Wins

Duckworth competed across six seasons of the MTV reality franchise: The Duel, The Gauntlet III, Cutthroat, Rivals, All Stars 2, and All Stars 3. He secured two championship titles during his run on the flagship series, winning on Cutthroat and later on Rivals, where he teamed up with Johnny Bananas.

Before joining The Challenge, Duckworth first appeared on MTV in 2006 on The Real World: Key West. In a 2021 interview with Entertainment Weekly discussing his return for the spin-off series All Stars 2, Duckworth reflected on his competitive drive. “I won two in a row and won against pretty stacked casts, but that was 11 years ago,” he told the outlet at the time. “And this sounds really sappy, but when you’ve already won, especially two in a row, for me it was more about: I just want to compete. I want to see if I still have it, if I can jump off crazy-high things or if I can do puzzles.” Outside of his television appearances, Duckworth worked as a middle school and high school teacher, according to Entertainment Weekly.

Final Public Appearance and Tributes from Co-Stars

Duckworth’s death occurred less than two weeks after he made a surprise appearance at a live fan event. According to AOL and People, he attended the Challenge Mania event in Minneapolis on July 31, where he met with fans and posed for photographs alongside fellow franchise alumni Rachel Robinson, Brad Fiorenza, Tina Barta, and Mark Long.

Scott Yager, co-host of the Challenge Mania podcast who coordinated the appearance with Duckworth, shared a statement with People regarding the gathering. “We are incredibly blessed to have spent some time with him just a few days ago in Minneapolis at Challenge Mania on July 31,” Yager said. “Like he did every day, he put a smile on everyone’s face and lit up the room with his infectious energy and incredible stories.”

Derrick Kosinski, a fellow Challenge competitor and co-host of the podcast, also paid tribute to Duckworth in a statement to People, recalling their time sharing a room on All Stars 2. “We shared a room on All Stars 2 and he was an amazing human being,” Kosinski said. “His passing is so sad. He was always such a bright light and incredible joy to be around.” He also noted Duckworth’s standout athletic eliminations on the main series, including competitive matchups on Cutthroat.

According to AOL and People, Duckworth’s mother stated that a cause of death has not yet been determined. Funeral and memorial service arrangements are currently being finalized by his family.
