1. The District Attorney of Auckland County and the Mayor of Oakland were successfully dismissed.

By a wide margin, East Bay voters successfully ousted Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price and Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, two prominent Democratic officials who had only served in their respective offices. To be ousted after just two years was shocking.

On the evening of November 8, the Associated Press announced that the prosecutor’s dismissal had been approved. In Price’s recall case, 65% of voters were in favor of the recall and 34% were against it. The latest results show that 63.85% of people support the removal of Tao Sheng, while 36.15% oppose it. The removal of both officials requires a simple majority vote.

Last Friday night, Tao Sheng admitted his failure on the social platform X. In the post, she thanked Oaklanders for choosing her, saying it was her “honor of a lifetime” as the first Hmong woman to lead a major U.S. city. Price did not immediately issue a statement or speech after the loss.

After Price steps down, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors must appoint a replacement to serve as district attorney until the next election in 2026. As for Towson, the city council president will be named mayor pro tem, and the city has 120 days (about four months) to hold a special election to fill her seat.

2. California passes new fuel standards

The California Air Resources Board recently voted to update the state’s low-carbon fuel standards. Liane Randolph, chairwoman of the California Air Resources Board, said, “To successfully combat climate change, we must continue to reduce fossil fuel consumption.” The move is in line with Gov. Gavin Newsom’s goal of reducing emissions by 2030. The goal is to reduce the amount by half.

The California Air Resources Board, which released a cost-benefit analysis last year, estimated the original proposal could result in a 47-cent-per-gallon increase in gas prices by 2025. After updating the proposal, the agency concluded that it would not be able to accurately predict gasoline prices.

The national average gas price is now $3.09, down 10 cents from a month ago. In California, the average price was $4.68, down 16 cents from a month ago.

The California Air Resources Board first approved the low-carbon fuel standard in 2009. In recent years, the state has passed policies to phase out the sale of new cars, trucks, trains and lawn mowers powered by fossil fuels.

3. California Governor Newsom fined for delay in reporting charitable donations

California Gov. Gavin Newsom agreed to pay fines for failing to promptly report charitable donations made by companies on his behalf. The Democratic governor agreed to pay $13,000 to the Fair Political Practices Commission, the Los Angeles Times recently reported.

State law requires elected officials to report donations made on their behalf within 30 days. Elected officials often require companies to make these charitable contributions, which are exempt from campaign contribution limits but must be reported.

The committee said Newsom and his 2018 campaign committee failed to submit donation reports on time 18 times, sometimes months late. Reports say that included a payment of more than $12 million from T-Mobile.

Newsom’s campaign said some documents were late because they had to rely on third parties to track the information. Nathan Click, a spokesman for the governor, said Newsom has submitted another thousand similar reports on time.
