The Cure‘s comeback album, Songs Of A Lost World, achieved significant success, debuting at No.1 in the UK with sales of 51,362. This figure surpassed the total sales of the rest of the Top 5 combined. Ben Mortimer, president of Polydor Label Group, noted the overwhelming public response to Robert Smith‘s return.

This album, the band’s first in 16 years, also topped charts in multiple countries, including Austria, Belgium, and France. It reached No.2 in Italy, No.3 in Ireland and New Zealand, No.4 in the US, and No.5 in Australia and Norway.

Nickie Owen from Universal Music UK explained that anticipation built through prior announcements and live performances of new songs. The marketing campaign included outdoor billboards and personalized postcards to engage fans before the official album announcement. A translated interview with Robert Smith was shared with media outlets to maintain interest.

Owen highlighted that this campaign successfully re-established The Cure with a global audience. The strong sales and critical acclaim demonstrated their enduring influence in the music industry.

The marketing efforts in France included partnerships with major radio stations and promotional events like listening parties and album pop-up stores. As a result, the album sold over 20,000 copies in its first week in France, marking The Cure’s first No.1 album there.

Owen noted that this release marked a historic achievement, with nine No.1s across Europe and the UK. The coordinated marketing efforts across various countries and platforms contributed to the strong global pre-orders and streaming success.

The launch included a global livestream event, with local events and midnight openings to celebrate the release, further engaging fans.
