Casting Director Julie Schubert on “The Diplomat” and Global Talent Search

Julie Schubert, the Emmy Award-winning casting director behind “House of Cards,” discussed her approach to casting the Netflix series “The Diplomat,” starring Keri Russell. Schubert, also an Artios Award nominee for her work on Season One, emphasized the importance of finding actors who not only excel in thier roles but also contribute positively to the show’s collaborative environment.
Schubert, who once aspired to be an actress, said her early experiences helped her understand actors. “I get to work with actors all the time, which I love,” Schubert said. “I get to play in new and engaging worlds with each new film or series I cast.”
Landing the role of casting director for “The Diplomat” required its own audition, Schubert revealed. She said she was instantly captivated by the script and eager to join the team. “I read the script and was completely blown away,” Schubert said. “it was immediate to me how incredibly special this show was going to be, and I desperately wanted to be a part of it.”
Casting Keri Russell as the lead was the first crucial step. Rufus Sewell was then cast as Hal. “Keri Russell was the first piece of casting on the series,” Schubert said. “Because you don’t have ‘The Diplomat’ without THE Diplomat.” She added that Russell and Sewell have magnetic chemistry together.
Ato Essandoh and Ali Ahn were cast as Stuart and Eidra, respectively. Schubert also credited her UK casting partners, Lucinda Syson and Natasha Vincent, for bringing David Gyasi and Rory Kinnear to the project. Michael mckean and Nana Mensah were later cast as President Rayburn and billie Appiah, respectively.
Schubert also discussed the addition of Allison Janney in Season 2. ”It’s Allison Janney,” Schubert said.”Easiest conversation in the world. Especially if she says yes!”
The upcoming third season will feature Bradley Whitford. “If you thoght Season 2 was exciting, wait til you see what Bradley Whitford brings to the table in Season 3,” Schubert said.
Schubert actively seeks talent worldwide, attending festivals and immersing herself in diverse performances. “Talent is everywhere,” Schubert said. “I’ve gone to festivals around the world; I am constantly watching theater, film and TV.” She also emphasized that portrayal is not a barrier to auditioning.
When it comes to auditions, Schubert values actors who bring a unique perspective and are willing to collaborate. “I’m looking for an actor to come in with a point of view,” Schubert said. “An actor coming in with an idea is so exciting.”
