Operating in Brazil and broader Latin America presented severe financial obstacles for musicians, as many fans lacked the funds to attend live shows regularly.
Economic Hurdles and Import Taxes in the Brazilian Underground
According to Amaral’s statements to Sunray Magazine, acquiring professional gear in Brazil required navigating prohibitively high import taxes that could reach approximately 70 percent. This surcharge meant musicians often paid nearly three times the standard international price for a guitar. In addition to financial costs, local performance venues frequently featured old or broken equipment. Despite these limitations, Amaral developed an unconventional playing style due to a lack of formal music lessons. Learning initially by ear on her father’s acoustic guitar, she adopted an incorrect posture and a unique pick-holding technique that ultimately shaped the band’s aggressive sound.
International Growth and Multinational Lineup Evolution
Nervosa achieved a major career milestone in 2012 by signing a contract with the Austrian label Napalm Records, resulting in the release of their debut demo titled “2012” in Brazil and “Time Of Death” internationally, as reported by Sunray Magazine. Over the following decade, the group expanded its international touring footprint, particularly across Europe, where Amaral noted that local support differed substantially from conditions in South America. The band underwent a major transformation in 2023, transitioning into a multinational lineup that includes members from Greece, with Greek guitarist Helena Kotina joining the group. Amaral assumed lead vocal duties alongside her guitar responsibilities, injecting fresh stability and aggression into the lineup.
Upcoming Releases and European Festival Appearances
Following the 2023 lineup shift, Nervosa released a music video for the single “Endless Ambition” in April 2023. Between May and August of that year, the band performed at several major European summer festivals, including Wacken in Germany, Copenhell in Denmark, Resurrection in Spain, and Inferno Metal Fest in Norway, according to Sunray Magazine. The group subsequently prepared for the release of their studio album “Jailbreak,” slated for global distribution on September 29 through Napalm Records, following the single release of “Seed Of Death.” Amaral continues to perform using her signature Kramer Nite V guitar model paired with a Line 6 Helix, a Pedrone amplifier, and Mesa/Boogie cabinets, maintaining a configuration designed to endure heavy international touring.
