The Fall of Segantii Capital Management
Once a prominent name in global finance, Segantii Capital Management, a Hong Kong-based hedge fund, now faces serious allegations. The fund, which managed billions, is at the centre of an insider trading case that has shaken the “block trading” model.
The founder of Segantii, has pleaded not guilty to the charges. According to a banker familiar with the fund’s operations, Segantii speculated on the timing of block trades—large private share sales in companies. Notably, Segantii experienced onyl one loss-making year in its first 15 years.
In 2021, Archegos Capital management, a US family office, encountered significant financial difficulties due to highly leveraged positions in US and Chinese stocks. As banks began selling off Archegos’ underlying stock, Segantii stepped in as a buyer.
Later that year, a former Segantii trader, Robert Gagliardi, was stopped by US authorities at Los Angeles international Airport with a search warrant for his phone. His trading activities at Segantii were part of an investigation into Morgan Stanley’s block trading business.
Concerns about block trading led Bank of America’s market supervision team in the US to issue a directive to cut off Segantii in early 2021.
In January 2024, the US case was settled without naming Segantii or Gagliardi, nor accusing them of any wrongdoing.
Though, months later, Hong Kong authorities issued a criminal summons, accusing the founder of insider dealing in an unrelated case. The trial is scheduled for May of the following year.
The hedge fund has since ceased operations and returned funds to investors. As one report notes, “this is just the end of the beginning.”
market Volatility Impacts Hedge Funds
Global trade tensions have triggered market volatility, posing challenges for hedge funds as they adjust positions to mitigate losses.
Recent weeks have seen a sharp stock market sell-off, impacting the hedge fund sector. Concerns over trade policies, immigration, and public sector cuts have fueled fears of inflation and slower GDP growth.
Hedge funds have responded by reducing leveraged bets to limit losses, decreasing borrowing from banks used to buy or bet against shares.
Millennium, managing nearly $75 billion in assets, “lost 1.4 per cent” in under a week in early March, according to sources. Citadel, with $66 billion in assets, was “down 0.3 per cent this year to the end of february.”
Some multi-manager hedge funds have reported the largest reduction in positions as late 2018,during a previous market downturn.
However, some firms are thriving. BlueCrest Capital Management, led by Michael Platt, has “gained almost 15 per cent” this year by betting on currency and bond markets.
Chart of the Week: gold Prices Surge
Gold prices reached a record high, surpassing $3,000 per troy ounce, a “significant milestone” according to the World Gold Council.
Investors have turned to the customary ‘safe-haven’ asset amid concerns that trade policies could negatively impact US economic growth.
Fears of potential tariffs on gold imports have driven traders to move bullion into the US, “sparking a shortage in London.”
The hoard of gold in New York has exceeded its previous Covid-era record.
Increased demand from the US was noted at a dinner hosted by the london Bullion Market Association in early December.
The rush to move gold from London to New York led to a backlog at the Bank of England, causing a liquidity crisis in the London bullion market.
The BoE’s deputy governor Dave Ramsden encountered delays due to bullion transport, highlighting the logistical challenges: “Gold is a physical asset, so there are real logistical constraints and security constraints.”
