John Stamos reveals that he did not get along with co-stars Bob Saget and Dave Coulier during the first few years of Full House. According to Stamos in an interview on The BobbyCast with Bobby Bones, the tension stemmed from a clash between Stamos’s traditional acting approach and the standup comedy backgrounds of Saget and Coulier. The trio later bonded over simultaneous family health crises involving their sisters.

Professional friction between Stamos, Saget, and Coulier

Stamos entered Full House with a background in soap operas, specifically General Hospital, and the sitcom You Again?. He told Bobby Bones that he approached scenes from an actor’s perspective, focusing on how to work the scenes based on his experience with sitcom veteran Jack Klugman.

In contrast, Bob Saget and Dave Coulier were standup comedians. Stamos stated that the two were often focused on making the crew laugh, which he found distracting. He noted that this behavior was especially prevalent with Saget, leading to a period where the three men did not get along at all.

I was coming from a show with Jack Klugman, who’s a famous sitcom guy and so I was, you know, coming to it with more of an actor’s point of view of these scenes and trying to work these scenes. And [Saget and Coulier] were just trying to make the guys, you know, the crew laugh. It was especially Bob, and it was distracting for a lot of it, and we didn’t get along at all for the first couple of years.

Stamos clarified that while he admires the art of standup comedy, he recognized it was not a skill he possessed. He also mentioned that he previously irritated Saget by focusing on the on-screen relationship between his character, Uncle Jesse, and the character of Michelle, played by the Olsen twins.

Family tragedies and the shift to friendship

The relationship between the three actors shifted during the third or fourth season of the show. Stamos explained that a series of health crises involving their sisters transformed their dynamic from co-workers to a support system.

During this period, Bob Saget’s sister was diagnosed with scleroderma, a disease Saget spent the remainder of his life advocating against and raising money for. Dave Coulier’s sister was diagnosed with cancer, and Stamos’s own sister was diagnosed with a brain tumor.

And so all of a sudden, we weren’t three guys on a show, we’re three brothers grieving our sisters. And, sadly, Bob and Dave lost their sisters, and my sister made it. It turned out she had MS instead of a brain tumor.

Stamos said these shared experiences led the group to become very close. He noted that he realized there was a lot he could learn from Saget and Coulier, and the three remained supportive of one another through later life events, including marriages and divorces.

The legacy of Bob Saget

The bond between the cast remained strong after the series ended and through the unexpected death of Bob Saget in 2022. Stamos described Saget as being

“bombastic with his love,”

noting that Saget would frequently send numerous texts and follow up with phone calls to ensure they were received.

While the adult cast eventually formed a tight-knit bond, other cast members experienced different dynamics. Jodie Sweetin previously stated she was closer to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, alleging that Candace Cameron considered her

“lame.”
