The Healing Power of Kindness and Music: Transforming Lives
Kindness and Music: Paths to Healing
By Paul Cerrato, MA, and John Halamka, M.D.
Kindness and music have therapeutic benefits. Acts of kindness improve mental health. The American Psychiatric Association states that kindness can reduce depression and anxiety. An experiment showed that patients who performed acts of kindness reported the best improvement in their symptoms, compared to those who socialized or underwent therapy.
Research indicates kindness boosts happiness and self-esteem. It can also lessen stress and emotional reactions. Interestingly, kindness can be contagious. People who receive kindness often share it with others.
Music is another way to spread kindness. Sharing the music that you love can evoke strong feelings in others, such as joy or nostalgia. The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews found that music therapy helps reduce depressive symptoms in patients. It is effective when added to standard treatments.
Music also benefits dementia patients, including those with Alzheimer’s disease. There are accounts of Alzheimer’s patients becoming more communicative when they hear beloved music. Systematic reviews support this, showing music therapy decreases behavioral and psychological symptoms in dementia patients.
In difficult times, we can forget we are part of a larger community. Kindness, supported by music, can help bridge gaps and highlight our common humanity. Embrace kindness and share music; you may find deeper connections with those around you.
