The South Korean historical blockbuster The King’s Warden has reached a significant box office milestone, officially surpassing 16 million moviegoers in South Korea. The film’s distributor, Showbox, announced the achievement on April 5, 2026.

The film has demonstrated rapid growth since its theatrical debut on February 4, 2026. It reached the 16 million viewer mark in less than 61 days, making it only the third Korean film in history to achieve this level of attendance.

According to data from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), the movie had earned $102.23 million at the Korean box office by April 4, 2026. Prior to this latest milestone, the film had reached 15 million viewers on March 25, 2026, and stood at 15,997,310 moviegoers as of April 4.

Box Office Trajectory and Records

The performance of The King’s Warden has placed it in close proximity to the all-time top spots in the Korean domestic market. The film is currently the highest-grossing Korean film of all time and is narrowing the gap with Extreme Job, which holds the second-highest number of admissions in box-office history with 16.26 million moviegoers.

As of April 5, the difference between The King’s Warden and Extreme Job is approximately 260,000 viewers. Current projections suggest the film may surpass Extreme Job during the second week of April. The all-time record remains held by The Admiral: Roaring Currents with 17.61 million moviegoers.

Audience Demographics and Repeat Viewership

Industry data indicates that the film’s success is driven by both broad appeal and a high rate of repeat viewership. A CGV official noted that the film is being viewed relatively evenly across all age groups.

Audience Demographics and Repeat Viewership

Data from cinema CGV reveals that 8.2 percent of the audience has seen the film two or more times. Specifically, 5.2 percent of viewers watched it twice, while 3 percent watched it three or more times. This level of repeat viewership ties a record among blockbuster films, a feat shared with other 10-million-viewer hits such as Masquerade (2012) and 12.12: The Day (2023).

Production and Plot Details

Directed by Jang Hang-jun, the historical drama is set in 1457 during the Joseon Dynasty. The narrative focuses on King Danjong (Yi Hong-wi), portrayed by Park Ji-hoon, who is betrayed by his uncle and subsequently dethroned. The story follows his exile to Cheongnyeongpo in Yeongwol, Gangwon Province, where he encounters the village chief, Eom Heung-do, played by Yoo Hae-jin.

The ensemble cast also features:

  • Yoo Ji-tae
  • Jeon Mi-do
  • Lee Joon-hyuk
  • Ahn Jae-hong

Commemorative Releases

To celebrate the 16 million viewer milestone, Showbox released a special music video for the song Companion (also referred to as Friend). The track is performed by cast member Jeon Mi-do and is part of the film’s official soundtrack.
