‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Cliffhanger: Showrunners Tease Season 3 storylines
Updated May 26, 2025
The second season of HBO’s The Last of Us concluded with a cliffhanger, leaving viewers eager for the next chapter. Showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann have offered insights into what awaits in season three, notably regarding Abby’s prominent role in the evolving narrative and the exploration of unresolved storylines.
Season two’s ending mirrors a pivotal moment between Ellie and Abby, setting the stage for Abby’s story to move forward. Druckmann emphasized the importance of promising the audience what’s to come. The ending ensures viewers understand the epic nature of the events about to unfold and the continued importance of Joel and Ellie’s story.

Mazin acknowledged the difficulty in replicating the jarring perspective shift from Ellie to Abby that players experience in the video game. He noted that while the show cannot fully reproduce the shock of becoming another person,it aims to honor the notion of different characters experiencing events in vastly different ways, ultimately converging in a ”convergent storm.”
Despite considering option endings, the showrunners ultimately decided to stay true to the source material. Mazin explained that changing the ending would alter the genetics of the story. He added that HBO supports the risks involved in making each season a different experience, even if it means taking away what viewers initially loved.
While season three will focus on Abby, Ellie’s story is far from over. Mazin assured fans that they have not seen the last of Bella Ramsey, Kaitlyn Dever, or Isabela Merced, and that even characters who have died will continue to have a presence in the story.
Druckmann echoed this sentiment, stating that even if characters are not physically present, their influence will be felt throughout the season.

Beyond Ellie and Abby, season three promises to delve deeper into other storylines, including Isaac, the WLF, and the Seraphites. Mazin wants to assure the audience that questions about the war’s origins, the Seraphites’ beginnings, the prophet’s identity, Isaac’s motivations, and the events of episode seven will be answered.
“The [third] season will arrive, and it will do what it does. Even if I thought I knew now exactly how it was going to go. I’m experienced enough to know that two weeks from now, we may have a different idea of how it should go,” Mazin said.
What’s next
While the exact release date remains unknown, fans can anticipate a deeper exploration of abby’s journey, the resolution of lingering questions, and the continued presence of beloved characters in the upcoming season of The Last of Us.
