A large-scale analysis published in Obstetrics and Gynecology Open reveals that bacterial vaginosis and sexually transmitted infections frequently occur together in women, supporting simultaneous testing for vaginal symptoms. Researchers from Quest Diagnostics and Hologic, Inc. examined medical test results from more than 1.5 million women between 2022 and 2024 to uncover the strong statistical overlap between common vaginal conditions and STIs.
Study Findings on Bacterial Vaginosis and STI Rates
According to the study, 39 percent of the participating women tested positive for bacterial vaginosis, while 29 percent tested positive for vulvovaginal candidiasis, commonly known as a yeast infection. Furthermore, 11 percent of the participants tested positive for both conditions simultaneously. The data shows that about 12 percent of women with bacterial vaginosis also tested positive for at least one sexually transmitted infection. In contrast, fewer than 4 percent of women without bacterial vaginosis received a positive STI result.
The researchers detailed specific risk increases for women diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis compared to those without the condition. Women with bacterial vaginosis were nearly three times more likely to have chlamydia, almost four times more likely to have gonorrhea, and more than three times more likely to have trichomoniasis. Additionally, they were nearly twice as likely to have Mycoplasma genitalium, a bacterial STI that can infect the cervix, urethra, or rectum.
