Today, Liss Ard Estate offers luxurious accommodations and a unique artistic experience. The centerpiece is the Irish Sky Garden, a breathtaking creation by world-renowned land artist James turrell. Our adventure began at the historic Liss Ard Estate, a sprawling 163-acre property boasting a stunning Georgian mansion and breathtaking gardens. After settling into our cozy accommodations,we embarked on a scenic drive along the coast,stopping at the quaint Bushe’s Bar.
The bar’s walls are adorned with nautical maps and maritime photos, transporting visitors to a bygone era of seafaring adventures. A toasted sandwich and a pint of murphy’s Irish stout fueled us for a brisk walk to the Beacon, a towering navigational column perched atop a sheer cliff overlooking the harbor.
As the sun began its descent, we found ourselves drawn to the mystical allure of Lough Hyne, a saltwater lake renowned for its bioluminescent plankton. Atlantic sea Kayaking, a local tour operator, led us on a magical nighttime paddle.
Owner Jim Kennedy,a seasoned guide with a passion for astronomy,pointed out constellations and even satellites orbiting overhead. As our paddles sliced through the inky water,the plankton responded with a mesmerizing display of green,glowing light,transforming the lake into a celestial wonderland.
Back at Liss Ard, we were treated to a culinary feast prepared by resident chef Braden Perkins, formerly of the acclaimed parisian restaurant Verjus. Perkins, clearly enamored with the local bounty, showcased his talent with sharing plates featuring fresh, seasonal ingredients.
The highlight was undoubtedly the salmon, sourced from the nearby Woodcock Smokery, its delicate flavour enhanced by Perkins’ masterful touch.
The following morning, we immersed ourselves in the vibrant atmosphere of the Skibbereen farmers’ market. Stalls overflowed with artisanal cheeses, locally cured meats, and freshly baked goods.The market’s diverse clientele, including a significant British community, reflected Skibbereen’s unique cultural tapestry.
Our weekend escape to Skibbereen left us with a profound appreciation for Ireland’s natural beauty, warm hospitality, and thriving culinary scene. Whether kayaking under a starlit sky or indulging in local delicacies, Skibbereen offers a truly unforgettable experience.
