Lilly Wachowski Discusses “The Matrix” Appropriation and Directorial Shift
The co-creator of ”The Matrix” franchise reflects on the cultural impact of her work and explains why she stepped away from directing, including a project called “Trash Mountain.”
The Weight of “The Matrix” and Feelings of Appropriation
Lilly Wachowski recently appeared on the So True with Caleb Hearon podcast, where she openly discussed her complex feelings about the legacy of “The Matrix.” She expressed a sense that the film’s themes and imagery had been co-opted and used in ways that fundamentally altered their original intent.
“I didn’t even want to make a sequel,” Wachowski stated, as reported by Dark Horizons. “I got to the point where I was like, ‘I don’t want to do this anymore.’ And then, when people started appropriating the ideas of the Matrix, and using it to justify their own beliefs, it just became really challenging.”
Wachowski explained that the appropriation of the film’s concepts-particularly by those with opposing viewpoints-felt deeply unsettling. “It’s like, ‘oh, you’ve taken this thing that was about liberation and freedom, and you’re using it to justify oppression and control.’ It’s a really weird feeling.” She added that this appropriation “remove[d] the weight of what those things represent.”
Stepping Away from the Franchise and Directorial opportunities
wachowski stepped away from the franchise after the original trilogy, leaving her sister Lana Wachowski to develop “The Matrix Resurrections” (2021) on her own. Currently, Drew Goddard is attached to develop a new installment in the franchise, with neither of the Wachowskis involved, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Wachowski’s recent projects include involvement with the upcoming comedy “Trash Mountain”, written by Rubey Caster and Hearon. The project was directed by Kris Swanberg (“I Used to Go Here”).
hearon revealed during the podcast interview that Wachowski was originally slated to direct “Trash Mountain,” but scheduling conflicts prevented it. “We lost windows and things shifted, and it was circumstances” that led to the change, though Wachowski remained involved as an executive producer.
