The aim of this 3rd session is to take stock of the steps taken in 2023 to fight corruption and define directions for the future in order to strengthen transparency and integrity in the management of public finances.
In his opening speech, Sayouba Sawadogo emphasized the importance of the fight against corruption, which he described as a serious threat to the sustainable development and security of societies. He also noted that this fight is essential to dry up the sources of financing terrorism and promote sustainable development in Burkina Faso.
The Ministry of Economy, in its fight against corruption, has implemented a number of initiatives, including strengthening internal controls, digitizing services as well as creating 25 anti-corruption committees. The mission of these committees is to promote integrity and honesty among agents of the economic and financial administration, as well as receive complaints and deny malfunctions in services.
“There have been significant results in terms of raising awareness and receiving complaints. We held 90 information and awareness sessions for more than 1,300 agents in central and decentralized structures. Also, 111 sessions were held for 8,394 users in seven regional capitals,” said Sayouba Sawadogo.
Despite these developments, the chief of staff called for continued vigilance and renewed determination in the fight against corruption.
“Sincerity requires us to recognize that the phenomenon exists in our country and that is why we use a certain number of measures to fight effectively against corruption. At the level of our department, the general inspection of finance uses its men in the field through a certain number of content investigations. So we can say, through the results achieved at the level of the general financial inspection, that in our country we are leading an effective fight against corruption. But we must not give up, or be complacent. We must recognize that the phenomenon is still there and that we must always take steps to fight this scourge,” he recalled.
In order to further improve their results, the ministry intends to add 5 new anti-corruption committees to the 25 existing ones, so that a committee is present in every structure of the department.
During the ceremony, Isidore Tiemtoré, special adviser to the President of Faso, who is responsible for matters of good governance and the fight against corruption, presented the new denial system established by the presidency. The activity report of the anti-corruption committees for the year 2023 was examined, making it possible to assess the progress made and discuss future challenges to ensure zero tolerance towards corruption.
