The Mysterines guitarist Callum Thompson has launched his new solo project AKA and released the debut single ‘It Grows On Trees (Money)’, accompanied by a video featuring giant human-sized dogs skateboarding through Liverpool.

The Liverpool-based musician described the track as a bleary, fuzzed-out, melodic psych rock jam that satirises the process of making money in the modern world.

Speaking about the song, Thompson said: “It’s a song about the surreal becoming real. It’s about finding yourself when you stop looking. It looks at how identity evolves in the modern media age – and the sense that certainty only exists in doubt.”

The single was released alongside a video directed by Charles Gall, known for his work with English Teacher, Sports Team, and Sigrid, which depicts a pack of giant, human-sized dogs skateboarding and running through the streets of Liverpool.

Thompson made his live debut as AKA in January in Brighton and later performed an exclusive set at Rough Trade East in London for Record Store Day 2026, which was recorded and pressed onto vinyl as a limited edition run for attendees.

He is scheduled to perform at The Great Escape festival in Brighton on May 15, 2026, and has a date booked at the Midi Festival in France on July 24, 2026.

The Mysterines released their second album ‘Afraid Of Tomorrows’ in 2024, with singer Lia Metcalfe describing the record as unapologetic and driven by the band’s confidence in their creative outlet.
