After a debt review, the National Council on Thursday recommended the rejection of the Popular UDC initiative “not from Switzerland to 10 million!”, which requires strict immigration control. Only the UDC supported the text. The center pleaded for a counter-project, without convincing.
(Keystone-ATS) The initiative requests that the permanent resident population of Switzerland does not exceed ten million people by 2050. The Federal Council and the Parliament should take measures as soon as the population exceeds 9.5 million.
Persons admitted provisionally could no longer obtain a residence permit or establishment, neither Swiss nationality, nor any other right to stay. If these measures are not sufficient, Berne should terminate international treaties, in particular the agreement on the free movement of people with the EU.

The UDC recalled that Switzerland had won around two million inhabitants.
