Tom McKibbin is preparing for what he expects will be an unforgettable experience: competing in the 153rd Open at Royal Portrush. The 22-year-old Northern Irishman, who played at Royal Troon last year, along with the U.S. Open and U.S. PGA Championship this year, believes that playing in a major so close to home will be unique.
McKibbin has extensive experience at Royal Portrush. “I’ve played here hundreds of times since I was 10,” McKibbin said.”To play a major championship on this golf course is going to be pretty special, the biggest event I’ll ever have played in under that pressure and atmosphere.” He was not present when Shane Lowry won the Claret Jug there in 2019.
The Open Championship at Royal Portrush promises to be a significant moment for McKibbin. ”It’s somthing not many people get to say, that they’ve played an Open in their home country,” he said. “To play it here on one of the best courses in the world,it’s going to be pretty special.”
