The Birth of MIS-I
MIS-I’s development began in 1964 as Lockheed sought to diversify beyond aerospace. The company partnered with El Camino Hospital to create a system that could streamline clinical workflows. By 1971, it was used across departments, including admissions, pharmacy, and radiology. The system’s impact extended beyond El Camino Hospital. By 1993, MIS-I was installed in over 200 hospitals across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. The IEEE Milestone recognition highlights MIS-I’s role in advancing healthcare technology. The bronze plaque installed at El Camino Hospital notes that the system “reduced costs and errors, improved safety and outcomes, and led the way to modern medical and clinical informatics.” The ceremony featured remarks from IEEE President-Elect Jill Gostin and a Q&A with Melville Hodge, one of MIS-I’s lead developers. Hodge recounted a 1970s hospital board meeting where physicians complained about the system, only for an emergency announcement to reveal it had failed. “I had to ignore it to survive,” he joked, recalling how nurses’ persistence eventually won over skeptics.
