The Pavilion House: A Harmonious Blend of Architecture and Nature by Malan Vorster
Hillside Haven: The Pavilion House
The Pavilion House, designed by Malan Vorster Architecture & Interior Design, is located in the Constantia estate. This space combines architecture with nature, providing a serene retreat.
The project started nearly two decades ago with the restoration of an existing house. This initial step led to the construction of innovative structures, such as the ‘Tree House‘ and a modern gym pavilion. More recently, the owners acquired additional land, allowing for further architectural developments.
A historic wagon road lined with poplar trees became a central feature of the estate. This path connects the old house with the new land, symbolizing the blend of history and modernity. The new structure respects the hillside’s steep terrain, ensuring a natural look that fits with the surroundings.
The Pavilion House offers stunning views of Table Mountain. Large glass windows connect the interior with the beautiful outdoor landscape. Inside, an open layout encourages social interaction while providing quiet places for reflection.
The building is constructed primarily from sandblasted concrete, resembling the local stone. The addition of planted roofs further integrates the structure into the natural environment. This design choice softens the edges of the building and enhances its connection to the landscape.
The landscape design complements the architectural vision, focusing on native plants that support local wildlife. A network of pathways and staircases invites exploration, allowing visitors to experience different views of the estate.
One unique feature of the house is the cantilevered reflection pond. It reaches out into the landscape and supports aquatic plants. This pond enhances biodiversity and adds a calming sound of flowing water, creating a tranquil atmosphere.
The materials used in the Pavilion House include rugged stone, natural slate, and smooth terrazzo. Together, they create a cohesive sensory experience, enriching the relationship between the interior and exterior spaces.
The Constantia estate represents a successful blending of architecture and nature. Its thoughtful design invites exploration and contemplation, allowing visitors to appreciate the integrated beauty of the project.
