The Puerto Rico Trench, the Atlantic Ocean’s deepest point, poses a significant tsunami risk to the U.S. East Coast, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Scientists monitor the region’s tectonic activity to prepare for potential waves that could travel from the Caribbean to New England.

The trench plunges more than 27,000 feet, or over 8,400 meters, below the sea surface. It spans approximately 500 miles north of the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, marking the boundary where the Caribbean and North American tectonic plates meet.

NOAA has developed models to illustrate how a magnitude 7.5 earthquake along the trench could generate a tsunami. These models indicate such an event could produce waves capable of propagating up the entire U.S. East Coast, according to the agency.

The Puerto Rico Trench differs from many subduction zones in the Pacific Ocean. In this region, the tectonic plates largely slide past one another, with only a small amount of subduction occurring, according to geological data.

The U.S. Geological Survey is currently studying massive underwater landslides located along the trench. The USGS reports that these ancient slope failures indicate portions of the seafloor remain unstable.

These unstable seafloor sections create a potential source for tsunami generation that is independent of major earthquakes. This adds a secondary layer of risk to the region’s overall hazard profile.
