Space agencies are racing to establish Coordinated Lunar Time, a unified timekeeping standard designed to prevent navigation errors and synchronize communications for future moon missions and permanent settlements, according to reports from the Financial Times and itime.live. As NASA prepares for upcoming Artemis missions, the project addresses the complex engineering problem of how time moves differently on the Moon due to General Relativity.

Why General Relativity Forces a New Lunar Time Standard

Time actually moves faster on the Moon than it does on Earth because of differences in gravitational pull, according to reporting by itime.live. Earth has a much stronger gravitational pull than the Moon, causing time on the lunar surface to tick faster by about 58.7 microseconds per day.

While that discrepancy sounds negligible to humans, it poses a multi-billion dollar engineering problem for computers, GPS navigation, and orbital docking maneuvers. Left uncorrected, that daily drift would cause navigation errors to accumulate rapidly, potentially causing an incoming spacecraft to miss its targeted landing zone by kilometers.

Moving Away From Ad-Hoc Mission Clocks

By implementing LTC atomic pulses, future space programs are creating the foundational framework for independent timekeeping zones across the solar system.
