The research explores the complex array of neurophysiological factors that influence the sense of thrill drivers experience behind the wheel. Castrol commissioned the research as part of its data-engineered ethos for product development. The data collection and analysis were handled by Brainbox, a UK-based neuroscience company providing advanced brain research technology, training, and scientific support.
To understand what makes driving fun and exciting, researchers fitted participants with brain, eye, heart, and skin monitoring equipment across five distinct tests. Conducted at the PalmerSport facility in Bedfordshire, England, these closed-course driving scenarios spanned from slow off-roading in a Land Rover Defender to single-seat karts, a McLaren Artura GT4 race car, an open-wheel JPLM car, and a passenger ride-along with a professional driver. Brainbox tracked 30-channel brain-wave readings, heart rate variability, skin conductance, and eye tracking metrics including fixations, blink rates, and saccades.
The Three Pillars of Driving Thrill
The study suggests that driving thrill emerges when three key factors converge into an elevated state of engagement. These factors include visceral stimulation representing an intense state of mental and physical stimulation, intellectual engagement measuring how engaged the mind is on the given task, and emotional balance identifying the balance of excitement versus fear.
When any of these three elements exceed a driver’s manageable threshold, external stimuli become overwhelming, and the experience shifts from thrill into a state of fear. Key stress indicators such as heart rate and eye movement shift into less consistent, less managed patterns when this threshold is crossed.
Data from the McLaren Artura GT4 sessions produced the strongest thrill signature across the trials. Drivers in the McLaren locked their gaze on the racing line for an average of 70 apex-focused fixations per minute while blinking just 2.5 times per minute, compared with 15 to 20 blinks at rest. Average heart rates climbed by 43.8 beats per minute in the McLaren and 16 beats per minute during the off-road course.
Why Speed Is Not the Primary Determinant
The findings challenge the assumption that high speed is required to generate excitement behind the wheel. Thrill criteria were met consistently during karting sessions on tight, technical circuits where outright speeds were modest, yet visceral, intellectual, and emotional thresholds were fully satisfied.
By contrast, passenger ride-alongs in the JPLM car driven by a professional instructor generated fear signatures rather than thrill. Participants in the passenger seat averaged 40 blinks and 190 fixations per minute while cornering, accompanied by an increase in fast beta brain waves linked with stress. Focus-related theta waves and calming alpha activity observed during the McLaren and karting sessions dropped away during the ride-along.

Thrill cannot be pinned down by any single metric; instead, it arises where heightened measures converge: the person undergoes a heightened state of neurophysiological arousal, feels entirely in command of the automobile, and remains cognitively and emotionally immersed in the activity.
According to Dan Phillips, thrill is fundamentally about focus rather than speed. The neurophysiological data captures true thrill at the exact moment a driver locks in completely, visible across brain, heart, and eyes.
Implications for Everyday Enthusiasts
The practical takeaway for drivers is that supercar ownership is unnecessary to experience driving thrill. Vincent Panel, head of product and communications for Europe at Castrol, notes that motorists can find a similar sense of immersive control through local karting tracks or favorite back roads.
While these controlled track tests utilizing professional oversight do not mirror daily commuting conditions, the findings offer insight into how brain and body signals might inform safer and more engaging driving experiences in the future.
