The Shocking Price of a Simple Habit: 21-Year-Old’s Eye-Rubbing Addiction Leads to Surgery
Young Man’s Cautionary Tale: The Dangers of Rubbing Your Eyes
A 21-year-old man shares a lesson about the need for a cornea transplant due to his habit of ”rubbing his eyes”, a common practice that can have severe consequences.
Muhammad Zabidi, a 21-year-old from Malaysia, shares his experience as a warning to others. After undergoing corneal transplant surgery, he wants to raise awareness about the risks of rubbing one’s eyes.
Zabidi has been prone to allergies since childhood, which often caused itchy eyes. He would frequently rub his eyes, leading to redness and worsening symptoms. At 15, he started experiencing blurry vision in his right eye, which gradually worsened over time.
At 21, Zabidi consulted a specialist and was diagnosed with severe corneal scratches and scarring due to his habit of rubbing his eyes. The doctor recommended a corneal transplant to restore his vision.
Fortunately, a donor was found, and the transplant was successful. Zabidi’s health stabilized after the surgery, and he was able to open his eyes after a few months. However, it will take about two years for him to fully recover.
Zabidi shared his experience on TikTok, attracting a large audience in Malaysia. Many were shocked to learn that a simple habit like rubbing one’s eyes could cause significant damage to the cornea.
Experts advise against rubbing one’s eyes too hard, as it can damage the cornea and lead to serious health problems. Repeated damage can cause inflammation of the tissue around the eyes, and the introduction of bacteria, viruses, or fungi from the hands can lead to infection.
Rubbing one’s eyes can also cause eye strain, headaches, and dry eyes due to the tightening of the muscles around the eyes.
