Shirley Henderson, the actress who portrayed the ghostly Moaning Myrtle in the Harry Potter film series, has detailed the significant age gap between herself and the 14-year-old character she played. Henderson was 37 years old when she auditioned for the role in 2002 for Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

The actor, now 59, has revealed that the casting process involved a deliberate effort to keep her age hidden from the production. According to Henderson, the casting director, Karen Lindsay-Stewart, explicitly advised her not to mention her age during the process.

Henderson admitted that she initially felt the casting was ridiculous because of the age difference. At the time of her audition, she was unfamiliar with the Harry Potter franchise, though her sister had read the books.
