The Story of Barcodes

Barcodes have changed how we shop. They make purchasing faster and easier. Today, people scan about 10 billion barcodes daily worldwide.

In 1969, Paul McEnroe from IBM envisioned using lasers to scan unusual black and white marks on products. He believed these barcodes would speed up checkout lines at supermarkets. This idea, still modern today, began from patents filed as early as 1949.

IBM engineers worked on making barcodes practical for stores. They wanted a system that consistently read codes correctly, even at high speeds. The original design focused on measuring line thickness. However, IBM discovered that measuring the space between lines was more effective.

Yet, the launch of barcode technology met obstacles. Some people protested changes in how prices were displayed. They feared that codes would hide prices and threaten jobs in stores. Concerns faded over time, but skepticism lingered. Some even deemed barcodes as ominous symbols of capitalism and surveillance.

Not everyone loves barcodes. In 1975, some considered them “The Mark of the Beast,” referencing biblical prophecies. They imagined a future where barcodes would be tattooed on people for easy identification. This strange idea has persisted over the years, with some even refusing to buy products marked with codes.

Despite skepticism, barcodes became vital tools in various industries. They are used in hospitals to track medications and samples, and even in space to manage astronauts’ food and belongings. Barcodes help organizations maintain large inventories and improve efficiency.

Today, barcodes are everywhere. They assist in monitoring wildlife and managing classroom attendance. They remain essential in modern commerce, ensuring smooth transitions from shopping to checkout.

Underlying their widespread use is a simple truth: barcodes save time and resources. Their success lies in their simplicity and effectiveness—qualities that most people take for granted.
