Allegations of Workplace Bullying at Taiwan’s CDC Prompt Investigation
On November 20, 2024, reports surfaced on social media about workplace bullying allegations against the head of the Department of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Taiwan. Spokesperson Luo Yijun stated there had been no formal complaints filed. Nonetheless, a task force has been formed to investigate the claims of workplace harassment.
Netizens described the department head as having an impatient demeanor, often raising their voice at colleagues and resorting to personal attacks. Luo claimed the department head had faced complaints in the past, but noted that they would not be removed from their position until new evidence emerged.
Kuomintang legislator Chen Jinghui disclosed that he received a call from a CDC employee. They claimed that the department head insulted a supervisor and forced the employee to resign. The employee alleged that the supervisor had been acting out for years, but no action was taken after reports were made.
Luo emphasized that investigations must respect the involved parties. To protect anonymity, the CDC plans to use surveys and consultations with external experts to ensure a safe environment for interviewees. The spokesperson also confirmed that, apart from anonymous online complaints, no other evidence currently exists regarding the situation.
Luo mentioned that past political behavior complaints involving the department head had been dismissed due to lack of evidence and were unrelated to the current bullying allegations. The CDC plans to publicly address the issue once the investigation concludes.
