"It’s a necessary psychological armor, but it’s also an exhausting responsibility."

The Role of Resilience

Despite these challenges, experts emphasize the importance of resilience—both for parents and their children. "Children learn how to handle life when things go awry," says Tovah Klein, a professor of psychology and author of Raising Resilience. "It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being there for them when they need you."

Klein and others argue that the narrative around parenting needs to shift. Instead of striving for perfection, parents should focus on being "good enough." This means accepting that mistakes are part of the process and that children benefit from learning how to navigate adversity.

Policy Solutions and Community Support

While individual resilience is crucial, systemic changes are needed to alleviate the broader pressures on parents. Christopher Mehus, a researcher at the University of Minnesota, is working on a program to provide accessible mental health support for parents. His NIH-funded study connects parents with therapists trained in a six-session child behavior support system, delivered online to eliminate childcare barriers.

"By linking this support to primary care, we can reach more parents where they already are," Mehus explains. "If we can show this model works, it could be replicated in other states."

Other experts advocate for expanded parental leave policies, affordable childcare, and school-based support systems. "Schools are central to a family’s community," Klein says. "We need to invest in them as hubs of support for both children and parents."
