The Verge Launches New Features, Editorial Newsletters
Table of Contents
The Verge is rolling out a suite of new features designed to deepen reader engagement and provide more personalized content access. The updates include a “follow” feature allowing users to track individual journalists and topic areas, a personalized feed on the homepage, and a daily digest email. These enhancements are part of The Verge’s ongoing strategy to build a loyal audience and a enduring business model in an evolving digital landscape.
Building Direct Audience Loyalty in the “Google Zero” Era
This latest update builds upon The Verge’s 2022 homepage redesign and its subscription product launched in late 2024. The move reflects a strategic pivot towards direct audience engagement, a critical approach in what editor-in-chief Nilay Patel has termed the “Google Zero“ era, where reliance on search engine traffic is diminishing.
Helen Havlak, publisher of The Verge, emphasized the importance of this shift. “Google Zero is here, and the only currency that matters is direct loyal audience,” Havlak stated. “We’ve spent years investing in The Verge’s own platform, and are thrilled to launch the next set of features for our loyal users. Our goal is to give our readers more reasons to log in; more personalized recommendations for stories they want to read; and more ways to access The Verge without any intermediaries.”
New Features for a Personalized Reading Experience
The new “follow” feature, available to all logged-in users, allows for a more tailored content consumption experience. Readers can now select individual Verge reporters or specific topic areas to follow. Content from these selections will appear in a new ”Following” feed on the homepage, offering a curated view of the moast relevant stories. Additionally, users will receive a daily email digest summarizing the top stories from their followed journalists and topics.
Along with the personalization features, The Verge will be launching several new editorial newsletters over the next month. A daily free flagship newsletter will provide readers with another accessible way to consume The Verge’s content. Furthermore, multiple subscriber-exclusive newsletters are set to launch, joining existing paid offerings like Alex Heath’s Command Line and Tom Warren’s Notepad. These new newsletters aim to provide deeper dives and exclusive insights for The Verge’s premium subscribers.
