Sarah Gigante is set to make her return to professional cycling at the Tour of Norway after a 265-day absence due to iliac artery endofibrosis surgery. The AG Insurance-Soudal rider from Australia expressed her excitement in an Instagram post, noting her long-awaited comeback since racing in Switzerland last september. Her return is sooner than anticipated, as she had to miss defending her title at the Tour Down under earlier in the year.
During her recovery, gigante focused on regaining her fitness through indoor training and participating in local criterium races in Australia. She also monitored her progress using Strava, even improving her time on the Tawonga Gap climb. The cycling star emphasized the positive impact of the surgery on her blood flow and leg comfort.
After a month of walking, Gigante transitioned to an elliptical trainer and eventually returned to cycling. Despite a dislocated shoulder that limited outdoor riding, she dedicated over 80 hours to indoor training in April. This dedication allowed her to emerge stronger and more prepared for her return to racing.
“Just being in the peloton again will put a huge smile on my face,” Gigante said. “I’ll of course try my very best to do what is asked of me by the team, but I think, for now, just being able to race again is amazing and anything else is a bonus.”
Gigante re-signed with AG Insurance-Soudal last year, citing the team’s support and belief in her potential. She views the Tour of Norway as a process of easing back into competition, focusing on supporting her team and enjoying the experience of being back in the peloton. Her comeback marks a meaningful milestone in her career after overcoming health challenges.
What’s next
Gigante aims to contribute to her team’s success at the Tour of Norway while gradually building her form. Her focus remains on enjoying the cycling competition and regaining her confidence in racing.
