Theater Awards Spotlight Excellence in Playwriting, Musical Theater and Performance

The theater world recently celebrated outstanding achievements across the nation, from New York City to Boston and Minneapolis, recognizing excellence in playwriting, musical theater, and artistic contributions.
In New York City,the 2025 Drama Desk Awards,co-hosted by Debra Messing and Tituss Burgess,honored the best of Broadway and Off-Broadway at NYU Skirball. Maybe Happy ending was a big winner, snagging six awards, while BOOP! The musical, Stranger Things: The First Shadow, and The Picture of Dorian Gray each took home three. Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ Purpose was named outstanding play,and Gypsy earned the nod for outstanding revival of a musical. The late Gavin Creel received the Harold S. Prince Award posthumously, and Brian Stokes Mitchell accepted the William Wolf Award.

Roundabout Theater Company’s Liberation received the Ensemble Award. Special awards went to stephen Michael Spencer, Stacey Derosier, and the team behind Danger and Possibility.
Simultaneously occurring, in Boston, the 42nd Annual Elliot Norton Awards celebrated the cityS vibrant theater scene at the Huntington Theatre. kathy St. George, a Boston-based actor, received the Elliot Norton Prize for Sustained Excellence. Awards for Outstanding Play went to Leopoldstadt, the men, and The Dybbuk. Next to normal won Outstanding Musical.
The boch Center Wang Theatre, Apollinaire Theatre Company, Greater Boston Stage Company, and Shit-Faced Shakespeare received Special Citations for their milestone anniversaries. Rehearsal for Life received the 2025 Elliot Norton Arts Education Award.
in Minneapolis,the Playwrights’ Center announced its 2025-26 McKnight fellowships,supporting mid-career playwrights and theater artists. Marge Buckley and Gemma Irish are the McKnight Playwriting Fellows,while Peter Morrow,Isabel Nelson,and Mikell Sapp are the McKnight Theater Artist Fellows. C.A. Johnson received the McKnight National Residency and commission.
Buckley plans to workshop a bedroom farce, while Irish will work on a play about the cooperative food movement. Nelson hopes to train in communal creative practices and restorative justice work, and Morrow will focus on developing his sound design practice. Johnson will adapt James Joyce’s “The dead” for the stage.
Back in New York City, the Pipeline Arts Foundation announced lianah Sta. Ana as the recipient of the 2025 michael Friedman Award for New Composition for her musical Performing filipina.pipeline Awards finalists included Eight Immortals, The Eternity Machine, The Jury, and ROJA, each receiving $20,000. Additional finalists received $10,000 each.
the Jewish Plays project also announced Jennifer Maisel as the winner of the 14th National Jewish Playwriting Contest for her play Provenance. The play will receive a workshop at the Berkshire Theatre Group.
“The play will receive the JPP’s signature workshop at the 2nd Festival of New Jewish Plays at the Berkshire Theatre Group on august 28 at the Colonial Theater,” the Jewish Plays Project said in a statement.
