“Everyone ‌in retail locally comes into the store,” says Sinead Roche, co-owner of the MACE branches. ⁣”We feed them. That’s not a boast, ‌that is reality.”

From the butchers at O’Connell’s to​ the fashionistas‌ at be Fabulous and Will, the shop is a favorite among Limerick’s long-standing businesses.

“For us, we love being able to service them back⁤ – as they service us. I think giving back is the key,” Sinead adds.

“We also have a ‍very strong grab-and-go section for people who don’t want to wait,” ⁢Sinead explains.”That’s very critically important to us, helping people ​who are in a rush in the city.”

A Family Legacy of service

The Roche family’s commitment to serving the community dates back to⁣ 1984, when Sinead’s⁤ parents ​opened their frist store in Shanagolden. Today, the family operates three MACE locations in⁣ Limerick, employing 52 local residents.

“My mum and dad⁢ started the business in a filling ‌station than,” Sinead ⁤recalls.⁢ “We have carried on the tradition of serving the community.That’s what we are about.‌ The ​customer has to be looked after.It goes back ⁢to the old ‍values of respecting people,understanding what they⁤ want and being open seven days a week to ⁤give a service.”

Awards and Recognition

The Roche family’s dedication to excellence ⁤has not gone unnoticed. MACE Catherine Street/Thomas Street has been recognized⁤ with two prestigious Shelf Life awards, considered the Oscars of the Irish retail industry. Catherine Markham, the deli manager,⁤ was also named delicatessen food manager of the year, a testament to the team’s hard work and passion.

Despite the challenges posed ‌by the Covid-19 pandemic, Sinead remains optimistic about the future of Limerick city centre.

“We are very much a retail city, not a living retail city,” she observes. “we need to be a living retail city. In different cities, that’s what brings it alive.”

Sinead’s vision for Limerick is one of a thriving urban‌ center, where people live, work, and play.

“We​ are vibrant, we are ⁤clean, ‍we are happy,” she says with a smile. “We want to be here,⁢ and we ⁤are happy ‌to be here.”
