A study found that people who eat 150g of fish a day are 30% less likely to develop cognitive decline or dementia than those who eat little or no fish.

The American economic media outlet MarketWatch reported on the 29th (local time) that medical and nutritional experts from Oklahoma, South Africa, Italy, and China reviewed 35 research papers targeting approximately 850,000 people around the world and reached this conclusion.

“Scientists don’t yet know for sure what causes or why fish consumption may reduce dementia risk,” says study co-author Giuseppe Grosso, a professor of biomedical science and biotechnology at the University of Catania in Italy. “But the effect may be due to omega-3 fatty acids, which are found in large quantities in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and sardines.” “It may also be due to bioactive oligopeptides, which are made up of several amino acids, found in fish,” he explains.

Although scientists have long believed that fish consumption is linked to brain health, the new study is a major achievement in that it proves a causal relationship, MarketWatch explains.

The problem is that fish are disappearing faster than expected. A study by marine biologists and ecologists from the University of Tasmania in Australia and the University of Victoria in Canada found that 85% more fish stocks than previously thought have declined to less than 10% of their former size.

“We found that many overfished species are in much worse condition than reported, and that the sustainability of fisheries has been overstated,” said Graham Edgar, the study’s lead author, in a statement published in the journal Science, an academic journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
