The Lingerie Brand Rouge-Gorge Closes Its Doors in France

Many stores in the U.S. and across the globe have faced significant challenges in recent years, driven by the rise of e-commerce, the impact of the health crisis, and the ongoing economic uncertainty. No industry is unaffected by the shift in consumer spending habits to online platforms. Rougegorge Lingerie, a well-known lingerie brand in France, recently experienced a major closures due to these factors, defiantly adding to a long list of retail stores forced to shut down.

The Rise of E-commerce and Its Impact on Retail Stores

Inflation has been particularly hard on consumers, leaving many struggling to make ends meet. Beyond the direct impact on household budgets, all industries and businesses are feeling the pinch. But small brick-and-mortar stores, in particular, are struggling to survive in an increasingly digital landscape.

The decline in in-person retail can be attributed to several factors. For instance, consumers are increasingly preferring online shopping for its immediate access to a wide range of products. It’s just easier and quicker to order online; delivery is instantaneous and direct to our doorstep. As a result, consumers feel less enthusiastic about visiting retail stores. Having to face traffic or lack of available parking also play a significant role.

According to the Department of Commerce, e-commerce has never been more popular: E-commerce sales in the United States reached 90.7 billion dollars, up 9.5% from the third quarter.

Fashion outlets in the U.S. who refuse to evolve and integrate web sales into their model are liable to face the same destiny as Rouge-Gorge Lingerie in France. For example, JCPenney, an American department store chain, has been closing stores across the country due to a shift in customer spending habits.

Rouge-Gorge Lingerie Closes Its Berck-sur-Mer Store

The hard truth is that many physical retail stores are on the verge of extinction, also termed as dying out. As well-known retail brands are fighting to compete in a saturated e-commerce market, they turn to liquidating assets and making severe cuts, most of the time, employees might loose benefits and jobs.

A Rougegorge Lingerie store in Berck-sur-Mer, France, closed its doors on February 22. After a 8 years stay in the Carrefour shopping center, the diesel loop and frequent power outages caused an overall annihilation of the business and it was practically shut down to the public former exucing liaison:

The team that managed the brand’s store announced via social media: “It is with a lot of emotions and a lot of sadness that we announce the definitive closure of our Rougegorge Berck affiliate store this Saturday 22nd. “At closing. Please come by tonight 6pm to say au revoir.””

As well as

““We invite you to visit our book of the guest and come from 4 to 6 pm, Saturday 22 February to say goodbye to us. We would not have any or little energy to converse in the future…

They continued their proscribed dislusion:”You will find the brand at Touquet or Boulogne sur-mer,See you tomorrow for the last goodbyes! Beatrice, Justine, Julie–Honorine and Mégane.

.“And inevitably, the only ones that will pull out, it will only be that of mouths and the special service supplies that Amazon and others will not be able to deliver.”

Others chimed in on social media, expressing words of encouragement, offering their own shares of sorrow:‘If anything else comes up, you guys know how to reach me…

“Mergers and acquisitions allows the surviving companies to grow, but it also means we turn our backs on the neighborhood sidewalf bars and high streets we used to frequent.”

Experts argue that this situation may just be the tip of the iceberg of the impending crisis of retail closures and the death of downtowns: Retail vacancies are up by about 0.5% in 2023, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers.

And with the economic instability showing no signs of slowing, consumers are beginning to feel the strain with particularly high inflation rates and credit defaults. Younger generations are increasingly hesitant to spend money on non- essential items. As one retail expert put it, “Inflation rates do not leave room for buying your desires, and inside old cashiers are a sad story of forced savings.”
