The Invention of the Balloon Catheter
The development of the Fogarty catheter occurred in the early 1960s, before Dr. Fogarty had completed his medical studies at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. At the time, he was working as a scrub technician at Good Samaritan Hospital.

During his time at the hospital, Dr. Fogarty observed the high mortality and morbidity rates associated with blood clot surgery. The standard procedure at the time required large incisions in the artery to remove clots using forceps. This method resulted in nearly half of the patients either dying or losing limbs.
To address these complications, Dr. Fogarty experimented with a balloon and a urethral catheter. The new method required only a small incision to insert the catheter into the artery. By passing the catheter through the clot, expanding the balloon with saline, and then withdrawing the tool, the clot could be removed safely.
Dr. Fogarty patented the device in 1969. The Fogarty catheter remains a ubiquitous tool in interventional cardiology, thoracic surgery, and vascular surgery, with hundreds of thousands of uses annually across the globe.
Further Contributions to Vascular Surgery
Beyond the balloon catheter, Dr. Fogarty developed several other transformative medical devices that improved patient survivability and surgical outcomes:
- The Stent-Graft: This invention improved the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms by using an implant to support the weakened vessel, avoiding the need to remove part of the artery.
- Surgical Clips and Clamps: He created Fogarty surgical clips and clamps used to occlude vessels during operative procedures.
- Hancock Aortic Tissue Valve: He co-created the world’s first tissue heart valve.
In 2008, the National Academy of Engineering elected Dr. Fogarty as a member. He was recognized for his invention of the balloon catheter, his development of devices that revolutionized vascular surgery, and his success in creating companies to commercialize these medical advancements.
Early Life and Background
Born on February 25, 1934, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to an Irish-Catholic family, Dr. Fogarty developed an early interest in building and fixing things. His father, a railroad engineer, died when Fogarty was eight years old.
Dr. Fogarty credited his father’s absence as a contributing factor to his creative nature. In his youth, he built and sold model airplanes to neighborhood children and developed a centrifugal clutch to address frustrations with motor scooter gears.
Despite his later success as an engineer and surgeon, he described himself as having not been a good student in his early years. He noted that his original career goal had been to become a boxer.
Dr. Fogarty was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons starting in 1973. His legacy includes the saving of millions of lives through the implementation of minimally invasive techniques for clot removal.
