Threads Introduces Custom Topic Feeds
Threads has rolled out swipeable custom topic feeds from the main timeline. This change allows users to engage more easily in community discussions within the app.
Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram and Threads, announced that more users can now create custom feeds based on keyword searches. Currently, not every user has access to this feature. For those who do, here’s how to create a custom feed:
- Enter your search terms.
- Tap the three-dot icon next to the search field on the results screen.
- Select “Create new feed.”
Users can also add specific profiles to their custom feed by visiting the profile, tapping the three-dots icon above the profile photo, and selecting “Add to feed.”
On desktop, you can create a feed by selecting “Pin to Home” from the left menu and searching for desired terms. This feed will also be available on mobile once you access the feature.
After creating your custom search feed, choose whether to display “Top” posts or “Recent” posts. You can swipe to your custom feed by tapping the Threads icon at the top of the screen.
Mosseri noted that this feature may help users stay updated with specific discussions, although he doesn’t see it as a game-changer.
Past Insights from Mosseri
Earlier this year, Mosseri responded to user requests for features like custom lists. He stated that while these features are valuable for engaged users, they do not significantly increase Threads usage.
Mosseri emphasized that reach is crucial for growing the platform. He believes that if users produce content that resonates, it will reach more people:
“Reach is always gonna be the thing that people focus on, for good reason.”
Meta is shifting focus from likes and followers to views, as views better reflect content success in today’s social media landscape. While algorithm-driven feeds may not yield immediate engagement like real-time updates, they often encourage more interaction with popular content.
The Need for Immediacy
Despite Threads adding Twitter-like features, the desire for immediacy remains. Users want an active flow of content rather than an algorithm-controlled feed. While Bluesky offers a more chronological experience, Threads leans into AI recommendations for engagement.
Mosseri previously stated that when users switch from algorithm-driven content to following feeds, overall engagement tends to decline. Recommended content generates more engagement, which is why most platforms use algorithmic feeds.
In conclusion, Threads continues to implement new features, but the quest for real-time updates may not align with the platform’s current strategy, which prioritizes algorithmic recommendations for increased engagement.
