While former President Donald Trump avoided direct accountability in the 2020 election aftermath by winning re-election last November, several of his attorneys have not been so fortunate. These legal representatives are now facing significant repercussions for their actions related to claims of election fraud, including potential jail time, hefty fines, and the suspension or loss of their law licenses.
William McCall Calhoun, an Americus, Ga.,attorney who represented Trump, served time in prison for his involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. Although released from federal custody in July 2024 and later pardoned by Trump this past January, Calhoun remains disbarred following his felony conviction. he maintains that he was unfairly targeted due to his profession.
Sidney Powell, a Texas-based attorney, also sought to overturn the 2020 election results in Georgia. Indicted by Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis under RICO statutes, Powell entered a plea agreement that included paying fines and restitution, as well as issuing an apology to Georgia voters. Despite this, she stated in an October 2023 deposition that she still believes the election was unjustly stolen from Trump.
Rudy Giuliani, former New York City mayor and Trump’s personal attorney in 2020, has also experienced significant fallout. He was found liable for defamation and ordered to pay more than $148 million to two Georgia poll workers whom he falsely accused of election fraud.Furthermore, Giuliani faces felony charges in Arizona and was served with the charging documents at his 80th birthday celebration.
Lin Wood, an Atlanta-based attorney who previously handled high-profile defamation cases before relinquishing his law license in 2023, is also dealing with significant financial consequences stemming from his work in 2020. He reportedly owes $16 million in jury verdicts and court orders to three former law partners. Despite these personal impacts, Wood asserts his support for Trump remains steadfast.
“At all times since 2017, I have been an unwavering public supporter of President Trump and his efforts to save America,” Wood said. “I remain an unwavering supporter of President Trump to this very day.”
