Three Dutch towns are set to receive a significant financial boost to revitalize their struggling shopping districts. Bergen op Zoom,Halderberge,and Fijnaart will share a total of €5.1 million from the Dutch government’s “Impulsaanpak Winkelgebieden” program, aimed at making town centers more vibrant and enduring.
Bergen op Zoom, receiving the largest share of €3 million, plans to transform its eastern shopping area. Part of the area will be converted into affordable housing,while the remaining section will undergo renovations. The Parade parking garage will be modernized and will include space for a bicycle storage facility, a library, and restaurants. The town also aims to increase green spaces to combat heat stress and flooding.
Halderberge,receiving €1.1 million, will focus on revitalizing the harbor area in Oudenbosch and the northern part of the town center. The goal is to create a more compact and diverse shopping experience with increased pedestrian and cyclist-kind spaces. the Professor van Ginnekenstraat will become car-free, and parking spaces at the harbor entrance will be removed. A floating restaurant pavilion will be added to the harbor.
Fijnaart, receiving €1 million, will relocate its supermarket from the outskirts of town to a new central location. the supermarket will be surrounded by shops, parking, and housing. The town will prioritize green spaces and create walking paths connecting the new shopping area to existing businesses.
