Three Modest Proposals to Address the Clock Change Issue

As we transition from daylight saving time, many feel frustrated. The period from November to March brings longer nights, leading to feelings of sadness and lethargy. But there may be solutions.

Current Situation

The CAQ government in Quebec has started a survey to ask residents if they prefer to end the clock switch. The survey presents two main options: switch to permanent daylight time or stick with permanent standard time.

Polls indicate most North Americans favor permanent daylight time. However, only Yukon has made this change independently. Others, like Ontario, have attempted to align with neighboring states for support.

Three Proposals

  1. Create a Unique Time Zone: If Quebec chooses permanent daylight time, we could declare our province a separate time zone. This move could encourage other regions to follow, creating a domino effect. Adjusting our clocks independently would be a simple matter; the time difference when crossing from Ontario could be easily managed.

  2. Split Time Within Quebec: Those who prefer daylight time could enjoy it while others choose standard time. For instance, eastern Montreal could remain on daylight time, while western areas might stay with standard time. This option would create two time zones in the city, allowing for personal preference.

  3. A Compromise Option: If the decision remains split, we could move the clocks ahead by half an hour permanently. This solution offers a middle ground, aiming to provide more daylight without completely shifting our clock system.

Each of these proposals provides a possible path forward. They prioritize the needs of residents while addressing the confusion and frustration surrounding the semi-annual clock changes.
