Three people died and 25 people were exposed to an unknown substance on May 20, 2026, at a residence in Mountainair, New Mexico.

Paramedics and sheriff’s deputies responded to a call around 8 a.m. Regarding a possible overdose at a home located at the intersection of Hanlon Avenue and Pinon Street. Upon arrival, first responders found four people unresponsive.

According to the New Mexico State Police, one person was found dead outside the home and another was found dead inside. Two other individuals required resuscitation; one of those individuals later died at the emergency room.

A fourth person from the home is currently being quarantined, evaluated and monitored at the University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH).

A total of 18 first responders were also transported to UNMH for decontamination and treatment after reporting reactive symptoms, including headache, vomiting, and nausea. Two of the first responders are reported to be in serious condition.

A spokesperson for UNMH confirmed that several patients were admitted just after 10 a.m. On May 20 for treatment following exposure to an unknown substance in Torrance County.

Investigation and Containment

Albuquerque Fire Rescue HazMat teams assisted at the scene to identify the substance. Investigators believe the substance was transmitted through contact and was not airborne.

The New Mexico State Police took over the investigation from the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office. State Police officials stated that the affected area has been secured and there is no further danger to the community.

Authorities have asked the public to avoid the area as the investigation continues.
