Three Ireland to Refund Customers Millions for Roaming Regulation Breaches
Dublin, Ireland – Three Ireland has agreed to refund approximately €3.76 million to customers after an investigation by the Irish communications watchdog,ComReg,revealed breaches of EU roaming regulations.
The refunds stem from Three Ireland’s failure to adequately notify customers when they reached pre-set spending limits of €50 and €100 while roaming within the EU.This practice violated regulations in place since July 2012 and 2022, which mandate clear communication to consumers about roaming charges.
Around 14,000 customers are affected by the breaches, with each receiving an average refund of roughly €269. The refund process is currently underway.
Along with the refunds, Three Ireland has committed to enhancing its customer notifications. Going forward, customers reaching their roaming spending limits will receive notifications that include information about available roaming add-ons, which can help reduce costs. The notifications will also clearly state the per-unit cost for additional roaming usage.
ComReg emphasized its commitment to ensuring compliance with roaming regulations. “ComReg will continue to monitor Three ireland’s compliance with its obligations and to investigate as appropriate consumer complaints whether arising in respect of the roaming regulations or otherwise,” the regulator stated.
ComReg further stressed its expectation that all telecom providers adhere to roaming regulations and provide transparent information to consumers. The regulator will continue its monitoring efforts and take necessary enforcement actions against any non-compliant practices.
