Lloyd Brian Twells, the 67-year-old man convicted of attempting to murder his ex-partner, has died of bladder cancer while in prison custody, just days before he was due to be sentenced for the attack.

Twells attacked Lynn Carrington in June 2025 at her home in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, chasing her through the house with a knife and stabbing her in the neck. The assault caused life-threatening injuries, resulting in the loss of 2.7 litres of blood and requiring 14 hours of emergency surgery at Queen’s Medical Centre. Medics stated she would have died had she lost another 300 millilitres of blood.

Twells pleaded guilty to attempted murder and was convicted at Nottingham Crown Court in December 2025. He was scheduled to be sentenced on March 12, 2026, but died in prison on March 5, 2026, one week before the hearing. HMP Nottingham confirmed his death in custody on that date.

As with all deaths in prison, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman launched an investigation into the circumstances of his death. No further details, such as the exact cause beyond bladder cancer, have been publicly released by authorities.

Lynn Carrington, 60, expressed deep frustration over Twells’ death before sentencing. She said she feels cheated that “nobody’s paying at the end” for the attack and that she has no closure. Carrington described ongoing mental health struggles, including flashbacks and fear of being alone, stating her head feels like a mess and she feels betrayed by the outcome.

She added: “I feel like I’ve gone through a nightmare and nobody’s paying at the end for what they did to me. I feel cheated. I’ve got no ending in my head. I know he’s died but he was dying of cancer anyway. It’s not fair. I feel betrayed. My head’s a mess.”

Carrington, a mother of six, said she thought she would get closure from the sentencing process but now feels the situation is “all up in the air.” She reported being very upset when police informed her of Twells’ death and said her mental health has since suffered, with frequent flashbacks and tearfulness. She no longer likes being on her own.

The case has drawn attention to the impact of violent crime on victims and the emotional toll when legal proceedings are cut short by a defendant’s death before sentencing.
