Oklahoma City Thunder Break NBA Scoring Record in finals Appearance
Updated June 14, 2025
INDIANAPOLIS — The oklahoma City Thunder achieved a historic milestone Friday night, setting a new NBA record for the most points scored in a single season. The record-breaking moment came during Game 4 of the NBA Finals against the Indiana Pacers, as NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander sank a free throw wiht 6:09 remaining in the third quarter.
Gilgeous-Alexander’s point pushed the Thunder’s season total to 12,162, surpassing the previous record of 12,161 set by the Golden State Warriors in the 2018-19 season over 104 games. The Thunder reached the new high in their 102nd game. This scoring record highlights the Thunder’s impressive NBA Finals run and their offensive prowess throughout the season.
The Thunder’s journey to the NBA total-points record is a testament to their remarkable season. The team secured a franchise-best 68 regular-season wins. Shoudl they clinch the NBA title, they would become only the fourth team in NBA history to achieve at least 84 victories in a single season. Only the 2015-16 Warriors (88 wins), the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls (87 wins), and the 1996-97 Bulls (84 wins) have reached that mark.
While the Thunder’s scoring average during the regular season ranked fourth in the league, their overall point differential tells another story. Oklahoma City boasts the second-highest average point differential per game in NBA history (12.2), trailing only the 1970-71 Milwaukee Bucks.
Coach Mark Daigneault attributes the team’s success to their mental fortitude. “I think there’s just a lot of integrity to the team,” Daigneault said. “I think that starts with the makeup that these guys have. Grate psychological makeup, competitive makeup, personal makeup. then over time we’ve had to really kind of forge into this version of ourselves, in visible spaces.”
This achievement marks a meaningful turnaround for the franchise, wich endured seasons of 22-50 in 2020-21 and 24-58 the following year before improving to 40-42 the year after that. The Thunder’s focus on internal growth has been key to their resurgence.
Daigneault emphasized the team’s focus: “We haven’t relied on anything outside the outcomes,” Daigneault said. “The noise, we haven’t relied on that when we weren’t winning. We haven’t relied on that while we were building. We haven’t relied on that while we were rising. We’re not relying on that now that we’re in a different position.”
What’s next
