Oklahoma City Thunder win first NBA Championship after dominant season
The Oklahoma City Thunder captured their first NBA championship in franchise history, defeating the Indiana Pacers 103-91 in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. the victory capped a remarkable turnaround for the team, which had struggled in previous seasons.

Oklahoma City’s journey to the title included a jump from 22 and 24 wins in 2021 and 2022, respectively, to securing the top seed in the western Conference for two consecutive years. Their 68 wins in the 2024-25 season rank among the best single-season records in NBA history. The team also set a new record for point differential during the regular season.
The Thunder’s combined regular season and playoff record reached 84 wins, tying the 1996-97 Chicago Bulls for the third-most in NBA history. Only the 2016-17 Golden State Warriors (88) and the 1995-96 bulls (87) have won more.
However, the championship game was marred by an injury to Pacers’ star Tyrese haliburton, who suffered a right Achilles injury in the first quarter. The injury sidelined Haliburton for the remainder of the game, ending his impressive postseason run prematurely, according to reports.
Despite Haliburton’s absence, the Pacers managed to hold a narrow 48-47 led at halftime. But the Shai Gilgeous-Alexander-led Thunder dominated the third quarter, outscoring Indiana 34-20 to take a 13-point lead.
Indiana mounted a late comeback attempt, reducing a 22-point deficit to 10 with a 3-pointer from Andrew Nembhard. Though, Oklahoma City held on to secure the victory.
“It doesn’t feel real,” gilgeous-Alexander said. “This group worked for it, and we deserve this.”
General Manager Sam Presti’s vision, dating back to the franchise’s time in Seattle, culminated in this championship. Since the team’s arrival in Oklahoma City in 2008, the Thunder have achieved the second-most regular-season wins and fifth-most postseason wins in the league.
The championship win occurred on the same day that Kevin Durant, a key player from the Thunder’s earlier contending teams, was traded to the Houston Rockets.
after Durant’s departure in 2016, the thunder entered a new era in 2019 when Presti traded Russell Westbrook and Paul george, acquiring Gilgeous-Alexander in the trade that sent George to the LA Clippers.
Alongside Gilgeous-Alexander, Luguentz Dort, an undrafted free agent, developed into an All-Defensive player. In 2022, the Thunder drafted Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams, who played significant roles in the playoff run.
Williams had a strong Finals series, highlighted by a 40-point performance in Game 5. holmgren, despite shooting struggles, contributed defensively with five blocks in Game 7, the most in a Finals Game 7 since blocks were first recorded in 1973-74.
“I never really play for records,” Holmgren said. ”Us winning is forever.”
With potential long-term extensions for Williams,Holmgren, and Gilgeous-Alexander,the Thunder, one of the NBA’s youngest championship teams, may be poised for continued success. The Oklahoma City Thunder’s championship marks a new era for the franchise and the NBA.
“They behave like champions,” coach Mark Daigneault said. “they are an uncommon team, and now they’re champions.”
The Thunder’s victory adds to the NBA’s recent parity, becoming the ninth franchise to win a title in Adam Silver’s 12 seasons as commissioner.
Gilgeous-Alexander’s season culminated in a rare achievement: regular-season MVP, Finals MVP, NBA champion, and scoring champion. He is the first player as stephen Curry in 2014-15 to win league MVP and a championship in the same season.
Whether this championship marks the start of a dynasty for the Oklahoma City Thunder remains to be seen, but after 17 years, they finaly have their first title.
