Tiafoe and Paul Reach French Open Quarterfinals for U.S. Men
Updated June 01, 2025
Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul have advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open, marking the first time since 1996 that two American men have reached this stage at Roland Garros. Tiafoe’s initial skepticism about clay courts seems to have faded as he continues his impressive run.
Tiafoe, seeded 15th,secured his quarterfinal spot with a 6-3,6-4,7-6 (4) victory over Germany’s Daniel altmaier on Sunday. Paul, seeded 12th, had a more straightforward win against Alexei Popyrin of Australia, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.
This achievement marks a significant moment for American men’s tennis. Before this year, no U.S. man had reached the quarterfinals in paris since Andre Agassi in 2003. Tiafoe, known for his powerful game, had previously struggled on clay, but he has found success this year, not dropping a set so far.
Tiafoe, 27, of Maryland, expressed his belief in his ability to compete with anyone. “I genuinely feel I can beat anybody on any specific day,” he said.
On clay,I get a little more passive than on other surfaces, because the court doesn’t help me play as fast as I would like. Patience is a thing I struggle with.
Looking ahead, Tiafoe will face No. 8 Lorenzo Musetti in the quarterfinals. Paul is set to play No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz.
along with the men’s success, four American women are competing in the fourth round: Coco Gauff, Jessica pegula, Madison Keys, and Hailey Baptiste.
What’s next
The upcoming quarterfinal matches promise intense competition as Tiafoe and Paul aim to continue their historic runs at the French Open, possibly setting up a deep run for American tennis at the tournament.
