STUTTGART, Germany (AP) — Tiago Tomás’ spectacular 119th-minute backheel goal sent Stuttgart back to the German Cup final against Bayern Munich.
The Portuguese forward delivered a moment of individual brilliance in extra time, controlling a loose pass with his chest before executing a precise backheel finish past the Freiburg goalkeeper to secure a 2-1 victory for VfB Stuttgart in the semifinal clash.
Tomás, who returned to Stuttgart from Wolfsburg in August 2025 on a reported fee of €13 million plus potential add-ons, has quickly reestablished himself as a key attacking option for Sebastian Hoeneß’s side. His goal not only sent Stuttgart to the DFB-Pokal final but also highlighted his technical ability and composure under pressure.
The goal came after a tightly contested match in which Freiburg had taken an early lead through a penalty kick. Stuttgart equalized in the second half before Tomás’ late heroics forced extra time, where he produced the decisive moment in the 119th minute.
According to VfB Stuttgart’s official announcement of his return, Tomás signed a contract valid until June 30, 2029, and will wear the number eight jersey. Sporting director Christian Gentner praised the forward’s qualities, stating: “Tiago has a lot of qualities. He’s quick, a good dribbler and has superb technique. Not only do his abilities mean he is very well suited to our style of play, but he will also make our attacks much more varied and therefore more effective.”
Tomás himself expressed enthusiasm about rejoining the club, saying: “I’m really happy to be able to play for VfB again. I’m delighted that the transfer worked out and I’m looking forward to being part of the whole team. The club has developed greatly since my first time here. I want to contribute with my performances so that we can achieve our new objectives and be successful together.”
The goal adds to Tomás’ growing reputation for producing memorable moments in big games. Earlier in his career, he scored a notable backheel goal during his initial loan spell at Stuttgart in the 2022-23 season, and his latest effort demonstrates his continued development as a technically gifted forward capable of delivering in high-stakes situations.
Stuttgart will now face Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal final, aiming to secure silverware after earning promotion back to the Bundesliga via the relegation playoffs in 2023. Tomás’ contribution could prove vital as the club seeks to build on its recent progress and challenge for trophies on multiple fronts.
