The Weight of Expectations
Scottie Scheffler, currently the world’s number one golfer,is acutely aware of the comparisons to Tiger Woods. While acknowledging Woods’ monumental impact on the sport – inspiring a generation and setting an unparalleled standard of weekly excellence – Scheffler firmly dismisses the notion of equivalence. “It’s very stupid to compare me to Tiger Woods,” Scheffler stated, emphasizing Woods’ unique and enduring legacy in golf history.
A Pivotal Moment at the 2020 Masters
A defining moment in Scheffler’s career occurred during the final round of the Masters Tournament in November 2020. Paired with Woods, despite both golfers being out of contention (11 strokes off the lead), Scheffler witnessed a masterclass in mental fortitude. He recalls Woods’ resolute play, specifically a 10 on the par-3 12th hole followed by a string of birdies on the remaining six holes. This display of resilience, even when victory was unattainable, profoundly impacted scheffler.
Scheffler remembers being struck by Woods’ unwavering concentration even on the first tee. “I watched him read his line on the green, and I said to myself, ‘Oh, my God, this guy is realy concentrated.'” This observation sparked a crucial shift in Scheffler’s own approach to the game.
The Pursuit of Consistent Intensity
Prior to that experience, Scheffler admits to feeling like an observer, lacking the unwavering intensity needed to consistently compete at the highest level. He realized he needed to emulate Woods’ dedication to every shot, every round. “I felt like I had to make a change, to have the same level of intensity each round, every time,” Scheffler explained. “And I have the impression that I know a lot of success currently in the tournaments as… of my consistency and my intensity with each round, without ever relaxing, without ever taking a tournament lightly.”
This commitment to intensity has been a hallmark of Scheffler’s success since his breakthrough win at the Phoenix Open in 2022, quickly followed by a Masters Tournament victory and ascension to the world No. 1 ranking.
Scheffler enters the current PGA circuit championship – the action of which can be followed starting Thursday at 3 p.m. on RDS.ca – with a strong track record. The tournament has adopted a new format, emphasizing consistent performance throughout the season. The top 30 golfers in the PGA classification will compete over 72 holes for the FedEx Cup.
While acknowledging that golf is a sport where perfection is elusive, Scheffler’s consistent performance demonstrates a commitment to maximizing his potential in every tournament. He understands that success isn’t guaranteed, but his dedication to intensity and consistency positions him as a formidable contender.
